Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts (part 5)

I’m a little torn at the moment. It’s Saturday and the weather is absolutely perfect. However, instead of taking advantage of the beautiful weather and the fact that it is a Saturday, I am sitting here writing about Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts. Don’t worry though. I can fight through my bitterness because in the end, we all need to hear what I’m about to say, write actually. Here are the 8 Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts we have discussed up to this point:

  1. Build a Strong and Effective Social Network
  2. Don’t Spam
  3. Establish Trust and Credibility
  4. Remember Your Social Profiles
  5. Listen
  6. Don’t Ditch SEO
  7. Think Before You Speak
  8. Don’t be Dull

Today we are going to add two more items to the list. You may be thinking when will the list end? How many components are there before we reach a point of overload? Well, there are 14 components. We will post 2 more articles in this 7 part series after today. Now that I’ve justified this post, let’s continue.

9. Stick to Your Brand

You need to remember the big picture when you’re engaging in social media marketing. The big picture is your brand. That’s it. Branding is vital to the success of everyone.

You should have a well thought out plan of how you intend to brand you, yours services, your business, or anything else before you begin marketing.  You have to pick a direction and stick to it. The reason for this is because you are going to confuse people if you don’t. Think about the Nike Swoosh for a moment. People from all over the world know that the Swoosh is a representation of Nike. What if Nike decided to remove the Swoosh from all of their products and replace it with a really cool looking box? Imagine the confusion that would create. No, you are not Nike, but you are (should be) trying to build a brand for yourself. Branding creates long-term success. So, decide on your brand direction and stick to it.

10. Don’t be Unpredictable

Some of my friends and colleagues may disagree with this but I don’t care. They would be wrong for disagreeing.  J

Don’t be unpredictable. I’m not talking about surprises or even the use of creativity. I’m talking about content and updates. If you post a new article on a daily basis for one month then you should try and maintain that practice. Don’t post 6 articles one week and 2 articles the next week. This holds true for your social networking profiles. Be consistent with your Facebook and Twitter updates.

Your website visitors will quickly establish an expectation for what you should be doing. Don’t surprise them by not meetings these expectations. They don’t want to have to guess when you will be posting next. In fact, they won’t. They will quit visiting. Maintain a certain level of consistency. Stick to your brand and don’t be unpredictable.

Tomorrow we will get into part 6. The finish line is near my friends.
