Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts (part 4)

Welcome to part 4 of our Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts discussion. Here’s what we’ve covered so far:

  1. Build a Strong and Effective Social Network
  2. Don’t Spam
  3. Establish Trust and Credibility
  4. Remember Your Social Profiles
  5. Listen
  6. Don’t Ditch SEO

In the next few paragraphs we will be discussing some areas of Social Media Marketing that will enable you to live a long and healthy social networking life as well as keep people coming back for more. Without further ado, let us proceed.

7. Think Before You Speak

This is a tough one…for all of us. We tend to shoot from the hip and let it fly right out of our mouth into the social networking abyss. This is extremely dangerous. It’s one thing if you’re not promoting anything and you’re just being yourself. It’s another thing when you’re trying to establish a brand and generate income. You should always think about the following, regardless of the business you are representing, before you hit that submit button:

  • What are the possible interpretations of my message?
  • Will my message alienate anyone?
  • Is my message positive?

All it takes is one mistake my friend. Say the wrong thing and you will commit social networking suicide. I always recommend typing your message in Notepad or Word and review what you’re about to say before you broadcast it to the world. If you don’t want to do that, then develop a habit of reviewing your message carefully before submitting it.

8. Don’t be Dull

Whatever you do, please do not make me feel like I’m reading a manual or textbook when I’m reading your message. Humor is good. Being witty is good. I want to have the feeling that I’m communicating with a real person when I’m reading something. I don’t care what you’re topic is. Your niche may be flooring. Is that an interesting topic? That answer depends on who you ask I guess. The point is, make it interesting for anyone that may read it, not just floor laying people. For example, tell me that your co-worker needs suspenders on his Fruit of the Looms because he tends to be revealing when he leans over to do his floor laying stuff.

Now, I’m not saying to lie or make up something humorous. I am saying that if you do not have anything that will capture and maintain my interest, then it is okay to use your imagination to get creative.

The moral of today’s story is to think and be creative. Tomorrow we’ll get into part 5 of our 7 part series.
